Al-Infitar 82:7

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ

“Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before you ever stood tall, Another measured, levelled and balanced you; the posture you are proud of was a gift, not an achievement.

A reflection

From the like of this

A new manager arrives on his first morning. He walks the whole length of the open-plan office slowly, phone to his ear, so that every head looks up. It is not quite arrogance. It is a small performance of size.

Musnad Aḥmad keeps a scene that answers that walk. The Prophet ﷺ spat into his own palm and placed a finger on it. Then he said that Allah says: Son of Adam, how can you defeat Me, when I created you from the like of this? Ibn Mājah reports it too, and its chain is graded ḥasan; another grading calls it ṣaḥīḥ.

The hadith goes on, in words that echo this ayah almost exactly. Until, when I had proportioned you and balanced you, you walked in two fine cloaks, and the earth shook under your tread. You gathered, and you held back. Then, when your soul reached your collarbones, you said: I will give in charity. And how is it the time for charity?

That is the ego's whole career in four lines. Made from almost nothing. Proportioned and balanced by Another. Then the walk across the office. Then the gathering and withholding. Then the throat, and a generosity that comes too late.

The ayah does not insult the body. It honours it: created, levelled, balanced. One classical commentator reads each verb as proof of the generosity named in the ayah before. What the ayah removes is the signature we add at the bottom. No one proportions himself. No one balances his own two hands before he is born.

Someone may ask why Allah reminds us of so humble an origin. Is it to humiliate? The hadith shows the opposite purpose. It is not said to shame the body. It is said so that the swagger stops while there is still time to give. The One who made you needs nothing from you (35:15). The reminder is for the one who is still walking.

So when you notice your own walk across some room, remember the palm. Then do what the hadith points to. Give something today, while your hand is still yours to open.
