An-Nazi'at 79:30
وَٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَىٰهَآ
“And after that He spread the earth.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After raising the sky, He spread the earth wide and smooth for us, like a hollow swept in the sand to cradle what is precious.
A reflection
The pitch nobody thanks
At a county cricket ground, the head groundsman begins preparing the pitch weeks before the first match. He rolls it, cuts it, waters it, rolls it again, until it is level to a fraction. On match day, the players walk out, take guard and never give it a thought. The crowd cheers the batsmen. Nobody cheers the ground.
This ayah describes the preparation of the ground under every human life. Wa-l-arḍa baʿda dhālika daḥāhā: and the earth, after that, He spread it out. The sources explain that He stretched and widened it for its people to live on and move across. One early report explains the spreading in detail. He brought out its water and pasture, cut its rivers, and set in it mountains, sands, paths and hills.
We walk on that ground from our first step to our last and almost never think of it. The level floor of a house, the road to work, the field where children play: all rest on an earth spread before we were born.
That is majesty the ego rarely notices, and it deflates it gently. We are proud of our property: the house we bought, the land we inherited, the garden we landscaped. None of us spread the earth under it. We are players walking onto a pitch someone else prepared, and claiming the credit for the match.
A doubt may arise. Is the Quran's constant reminder of what Allah made a demand for gratitude that He somehow needs? One classical scholar reads it as proof set before the deniers. The One who spread the earth for you can bring you back to it and out of it again. He needs nothing, not even thanks. The gratitude is for us; it keeps us honest about whose ground we stand on.
The next time your feet touch the ground outside, pause for a second. Someone levelled this before you arrived.
