Al-Baqarah 2:22

“[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].”

Essence

Floor laid, roof raised, water sent and fruit grown before you arrived: so do not set up rivals to the Host.

A reflection

The cottage was ready when we arrived

A family arrives late at night at a rented cottage in the hills, tired and irritable after a long drive. The door opens onto warmth. The heating is on. The beds are made with fresh sheets. In the fridge there is milk, bread, butter and a bowl of apples. On the table is a handwritten note: 'Welcome. Everything you need is here.' The children run upstairs. The parents stand in the kitchen, suddenly quiet.

One classical reflection reads this ayah as exactly that kind of preparation. It names the dwelling, the dweller, and everything the dweller needs. The earth is laid out as a firāsh, a bed spread smooth. A concise commentary adds a detail. It is neither too hard nor too soft, so that settling on it is possible. The sky is a bināʾ, a structure, a roof well built without flaw. Water is sent down, and fruits come out of the ground, 'as provision for you'.

The ego walks into this house every morning as if it had built it. We complain about the weather, criticise the food and never read the note. We take the floor for granted until it shakes, and the rain until it stops. We call ourselves self-sufficient while standing on a floor we did not lay, under a roof we did not raise.

Someone may ask why the Host should remind us of all this. Does He need to be thanked? He needs nothing from His guests (35:15). He wants no provision from them (51:57). The reminder is for us. A guest who never notices the host becomes careless and entitled. A guest who reads the note becomes grateful, and gratitude is a happier way to live.

The ayah then draws its conclusion. The classical reflection says reason reaches it at first glance. The One who prepared the whole house has no rival. So do not set one up.
