An-Nazi'at 79:34
فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلطَّآمَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ
“But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity[1846] -”
Saheeh International
Essence
After the list of gifts comes the flood that covers every other calamity, and every provision for the road reaches its end.
A reflection
The flood that fills the well
On the harbour wall of an old fishing village, painted lines mark the great floods: 1953, 1978, 2013, each with its height. Visitors photograph them. Then one winter a storm surge comes that covers the whole wall. Every earlier line disappears under the water. The biggest flood anyone had recorded is now just something beneath this one.
The first hearers had a word for that: ṭāmma. The root ṭ-m-m means covering a thing until it is level. A well was ṭumma when a flash flood filled it with earth, leaving the ground flat as if the well had never been. The sea was al-ṭamm, because its water covers everything beneath it. The Arabs had a proverb: the valley flooded and rose over the villages. They also said that above every ṭāmma there is another. That image is established in the lexicons.
So al-ṭāmma al-kubrā is the greatest overwhelming, the one with nothing above it. The sources say it is the Day of Resurrection, named because it rises over every other terrible thing. One adds that it overtops every calamity and overpowers it. Others say it is the second blast, or the moment people are driven to their final homes.
Every life has its floods. A diagnosis, a death, a failure that seemed total. At the time, each felt like the highest water anyone could imagine. This ayah quietly redraws the scale. There is a calamity above all of them, and it is coming for everyone.
That is sobering, but it also gives perspective. The painful things in our lives are real, but they are not the last line on the wall. They are not the greatest. Something greater is coming, and it is the one worth preparing for.
And the verse right before this one ended with 'provision for you, for a while'. Now the while is over. The flood arrives, and the provisions for the road reach their end.
Look at the highest line on your own wall. Then remember what will cover it.
