Al-Qamar 54:46

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ

“But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Defeat in battle would not end their account: the Hour is their real appointment, a blow from the side they thought safe.

A reflection

A girl at play heard it

A woman in her seventies can still recite the first lines her grandfather taught her, sitting on his knee, when she was six. She did not understand them then. She remembers the room, the smell of his coat, the rhythm of his voice. Decades later, the words have become her own.

Sahih al-Bukhari preserves something similar from ʿĀʾisha. She said that this very ayah was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ in Makkah while she was a young girl, playing. Bal al-sāʿatu mawʿiduhum wa-l-sāʿatu adhā wa-amarr. She remembered it, and she remembered where she was.

That memory has done two things since. It has dated the passage to Makkah, long before the events it foretold. And it has left us a picture of how the Quran entered a child's world. Not in a classroom, but in the background of play, heard and kept.

Children absorb far more than adults assume. They notice what is recited at home, what is said in anger and what is said in prayer. They file away the sounds of their childhood and return to them for the rest of their lives.

This is a quiet encouragement to anyone raising or teaching children. You do not need to make every child sit still and listen. Let the Quran be in the air of the house: recited at dawn, playing softly in the car, spoken at bedtime. Some of it will be heard while they play. Some of it will stay.

And for adults, it is a reminder that the verses we learned young are not childish things. They were planted to grow. Pick one you learned as a child, and read its meaning today.
