Al-Inshiqaq 84:20
فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ
“So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,”
Saheeh International
Essence
After the sky, the earth, the reckoning and the oaths, one question: what is holding them back from resting their trust in Allah?
A reflection
So what is stopping you?
An architect has spent three months with a family. They have seen the plans, walked round the model, checked the costs and stood on the site. Every worry they raised has been answered. At the final meeting she closes her folder and asks them gently: so what is stopping you?
Fa-mā lahum lā yuʾminūn: so what is the matter with them, that they do not believe? The early explanations read it as a question of disapproval, or of astonishment. What obstacle stands in their way, one asks, or what argument do they have for staying away, when its proofs are all there?
The small word fa, 'so', does a great deal of work. A classical commentator lists what it might be connecting to. Perhaps the horrors of the Day just described: if that is what awaits, what holds them back? Perhaps the Prophet's rising, stage after stage, towards his Lord. Or perhaps the oaths by the twilight, the night and the moon, all signs of a power that changes the world from state to state.
Read that way, the question gathers up the whole surah. The sky obeying its Lord. The earth emptying itself. The toil that leads to a meeting. The two books, the two homecomings, the man who thought he would never return. The oaths by changing light. Then, when all of it has been laid out, a single question.
One classical commentator makes a sharp point about this kind of question. It only makes sense once the proof is clear and the doubts have been removed. You do not ask 'what is stopping you?' at the start of a conversation. You ask it at the end.
That is why the question lands so personally. It assumes you have heard the case. It assumes you are capable of an answer. It does not shout. It waits.
So take the architect's question seriously, as if it were addressed to you. Not about faith in general, but about the next step. What, honestly, is stopping you?
