A reflection

'This is your Prophet'

Sahih al-Bukhari records a short explanation of this ayah from the Companion who was known as the interpreter of the Quran. 'You will ride stage after stage': state after state. Then he added: this is your Prophet ﷺ.

The classical scholars read that last phrase in two ways. Either he heard the explanation from the Prophet ﷺ himself. Or he meant that the ayah is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ. Many early reciters, including senior Companions, recited the verb in the singular, la-tarkabanna. You, O Messenger, will surely ride stage after stage. One great early commentator preferred that reading. He explained it as hardship after hardship, and said the meaning still reaches all people.

Others heard it as good news. Heaven after heaven, said some early authorities, meaning the Night Journey, when the Prophet ﷺ was taken up through the heavens (17:1). Rank after rank in nearness to Allah, said others. Victory after fear, and help after hardship.

Put those readings together and you have the shape of the Prophet's own life, as the Quran itself describes it. 'Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter? Did He not find you lost and guide you? Did He not find you in need and enrich you?' (93:6–8). Stage after stage. Some were bitter, some were glorious, and he rode every one of them towards his Lord.

This matters for anyone who thinks that hardship means Allah has turned away. If the most beloved of His creation was carried through stage upon stage of difficulty, then difficulty is not a sign of rejection. It is part of the road. And the same Lord who carried him from the loneliness of an orphan to the heights of the heavens is carrying you too.

When your own life feels like one hard stage after another, remember the Companion's four words. This is your Prophet. You are travelling a road he travelled first. And his road ended in nearness.
