At-Tariq 86:12

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ذَاتِ ٱلصَّدْعِ

“And [by] the earth which splits,[1904]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Allah swears by the earth that splits open for the shoot: a power beneath our feet that no one else commands and every harvest needs.

A reflection

The softest thing splits the hardest

A couple lay a new patio in the spring: sand, hardcore, heavy stone slabs, a rubber mallet, the lot. By October one slab near the lawn has risen a finger's width at the corner. Underneath, a ring of mushrooms has lifted it. The softest thing in the garden has moved the heaviest.

That is the earth of this oath, dhāt al-ṣadʿ, the earth of splitting. The early explanations are almost unanimous: it splits open for plants, trees and fruit, every year. One early authority on the language even called the plants themselves ṣadʿ, the splitters, because they crack the ground as they come through.

Our pride is often made of paving. Hard positions, fortified reputations, plans we believe no one can break. The surah is about to name such people: they are plotting a plot, and I too am planning (86:15–16). Their confidence looks solid. So did the patio.

Why would the Majestic swear by cracked soil? One classical answer is worth hearing. The sky with its rain is like a father, the commentator says, and the earth with its growth like a mother. Both are among the greatest blessings, because every good of this world hangs on what comes down and what comes up. Nothing is lowly once you see who is doing the cracking.

Is it arrogant for God to draw our attention to what He does beneath our feet? Nothing He shows us adds to Him: Allah is Free of need, Praiseworthy (64:6). The oath is a kindness to the proud. It is a gentle proof, repeated every spring, that hardness is not the same as strength.

The next time you see a weed in a pavement crack, do not only pull it. Look at it for a moment first. A thread of green has done what no argument could. It has got through.
