Al-Ghashiyah 88:19

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ

“And at the mountains - how they are erected?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Mountains set standing and unshaken, quietly storing water, breaking storms and guiding travellers, yet humble before their Lord in a way hard hearts are not.

A reflection

Harder than a mountain

Umm al-Dardāʾ, remembered among the early believers, had a habit on her travels. Whenever the party climbed a mountain, she would ask those with her: has the mountain heard what its Lord has promised it? They would ask what she meant. She would recite: they ask you about the mountains. Say, my Lord will scatter them as dust and leave them a level plain (20:105–106).

Mountains are the Quran's picture of what cannot be moved. A man who would not be shifted was called a jabal. Diggers who struck rock their tools could not bite said they had reached the mountain. And yet the Quran shows the mountains as the most humble things in creation. Some stones split and water flows from them; some fall down in awe of Allah (2:74). Had this Quran been sent down on a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, splitting apart in awe of Allah (59:21). When the Trust was offered, the mountains declined it, afraid (33:72).

One classical scholar draws the conclusion sharply. How strange, he writes, is a lump of flesh harder than these mountains. It hears the ayat of Allah recited and does not soften, does not humble itself, does not turn back.

We sometimes praise ourselves for being immovable: firm opinions, unbending pride, never backing down. The ayah shows that true strength and humility can live in the same body. The mountain is the strongest thing on the horizon and the quickest to bow.

Does that make Allah a God who wants to be feared? The awe of the mountains is not the terror of a prisoner. It is the reverence of something that knows exactly what it is before its Maker. Only those of His servants who have knowledge truly stand in awe of Allah (35:28). The more you know, the lower you bow, and the higher that bowing lifts you.
