Al-Fajr 89:8

ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ

“The likes of whom had never been created in the land?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Nothing like them had been created in the lands, and the ayah says 'created', not 'made': even their greatness was given.

A reflection

Created, not made

At a school prize-giving, the award for Athlete of the Year goes to a boy who has always been the fastest in his year. He barely trains. In the third row sits a girl who ran before school every morning for a year and finished fourth. Nobody gives her anything. Everyone claps for the boy's speed as if he had built it.

Read this ayah's verb slowly: lam yukhlaq mithluhā, the like of which was never created. One of the earliest commentators noticed the choice, and a later one agreed. Had the ayah meant ʿĀd's buildings, it would have said 'never made' or 'never built'. It says 'never created'. What was unmatched, most commentators concluded, was the people themselves: their size, their strength, their power.

That is a small word doing a large job. A building is made by its builders. A body is not. ʿĀd could take credit for their houses. They could take no credit for the frames that lifted the stones.

The lexicons picture khalq as measuring before making, the way a leatherworker measures a hide before the first cut. Every talent arrives already measured. The sprinter's legs, the singer's pitch, the mind that sees numbers easily: each was sized and handed over before its owner knew it existed.

This cuts both ways, and both are freeing. For the gifted, it removes the right to boast. You did not order your speed. For the less gifted, it removes the shame. You did not choose your pace either.

What is ours is the use. The girl in the third row owns something the fast boy does not yet own: a year of mornings. On the Day the surah will soon describe, that is what will be weighed. Not what was created in us, but what we did with it.

ʿĀd were given more than anyone of their time. The rest of the surah shows what they did with it.
