Al-Ikhlas 112:4

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ

“Nor is there to Him any equivalent."”

Essence

A kufʾ is whoever could stand shoulder to shoulder with you as an equal; the surah's last word is that nothing can take that stance opposite Him.

A reflection

The end of comparison

A kufʾ was the one you could stand shoulder to shoulder with, as an equal: in marriage, in combat, in a transaction between peers. The first hearers used the word for things matched down to the detail: two sheep the same size and age, two strips of cloth sewn edge to edge across the back of a tent. A poet begged not to be struck by a pillar with no kifāʾ, a force nothing could stand opposite.

Lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad is the fourth and final answer to the question that opened the surah. No lineage (ayah 1). No hollow (ayah 2). No family, no heir (ayah 3). And now: no one who could take up a position across from Him at all, not as a rival, not as a peer, not even as a distant second place.

Most of your week runs on exactly the comparison this ayah ends. The salary a friend let slip at dinner. The running app that ranks your pace against strangers you will never meet. The house two streets over, slightly bigger. Every one of these measurements only works because the two things being measured are standing on the same ground, shoulder to shoulder, comparable in principle even where one of them wins. The ego lives on exactly this kind of measurement, rising and falling with every one of them, which is exactly what this ayah is about to starve.

Set the whole exercise next to aḥad and it collapses, not because you lost the comparison but because there was never a shared ground to measure on. The gap between you and your rival is a rounding error next to the gap between every creature, including your rival, and Him. You can stop climbing. The summit was never a position anything could occupy across from Him in the first place.
