Ad-Duhaa 93:1

وَٱلضُّحَىٰ

“By the morning brightness”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before a word of comfort, He swears by the forenoon: the hour when the sun has climbed and nothing is left in the dark.

A reflection

The sun you did not switch on

The surah opens with an oath: wa-l-ḍuḥā, by the forenoon. That is the hour when the sun has climbed, spread its light and warmed the ground.

Think about how that hour reached you this morning. You set an alarm and made coffee. You may even call yourself a morning person. But you did not raise the sun one degree. It climbed for the farmer and the prisoner, the king and the cleaner, and asked none of them for permission.

That is the quiet majesty in the first word. The One who swears is the One who brings the forenoon out of the night every day. Our pride in our routines, our productivity and our plans shrinks beside it. We manage our mornings; He makes them.

One classical writer drew a further line from it. The One whose mercy will not leave His creatures in endless night, he says, does not leave them in the night of not knowing either. The morning is a daily argument that He sends light.

Someone may ask why God swears at all. Does He need an oath to be believed? The oath is not for Him. It points at something you can check tomorrow at nine, and says: the One who does this is speaking to you now.
