Ash-Shams 91:3
وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا
“And [by] the day when it displays it[1931]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Each morning the day unveils the sun and the waking world, a small rehearsal sworn by the One who alone will unveil the Hour.
A reflection
Only He unveils the Hour
Jallā is to uncover a thing so it shows bright and plain. The Arabs used the root for a smith polishing the rust off a sword or a mirror. They used it for a bride unveiled, for kohl that clears the eye, for bees smoked out of the hive. Here the day 'unveils her': most say the sun, which the day displays at full strength.
One classical commentary notices where else this verb appears. People asked the Prophet ﷺ when the Hour would come. The answer: 'None will unveil it at its time except Him' (7:187). The same word. Every morning the day performs a small unveiling. The last and greatest one belongs to Allah alone.
We like unveilings, especially our own. Picture a car launch: the lights dim, dry ice rolls across the stage, music swells. A chief executive walks out and pulls a silk sheet from the new model. The room gasps on cue. Months of work led to that one reveal, and he stands in the middle of it.
The ego wants to be the one holding the corner of the sheet. The day does not even get that. It uncovers the greatest light in our sky, and no one claps for it. And behind the day is the One whose unveilings we could not bear. When He manifested Himself to the mountain, it crumbled to dust (7:143).
Does Allah speak of this power because He needs us to be impressed? 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy' (35:15). The knowledge is for us. It shrinks our little launches to their true size.
So let each morning humble you a little. The sun comes out from under the dark without a stage, a crowd or a name in lights. One day the Hour will too, at a time no one but Him has seen.
