Al-Layl 92:5

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ

“As for he who gives and fears Allāh”

Saheeh International

Essence

The first road begins with an open hand and a guarded heart, and the gift is left unnamed so that nothing good is excluded.

A reflection

The only hour she does not check the clock

A young lawyer bills her time in six-minute units. Every hour of her week has a price on it. Once a month, on a Thursday evening, she sits in a community centre and gives free advice to whoever walks in. A tenant facing eviction. A father who cannot read his son's school exclusion letter. She once noticed something odd. It was the only evening of her month when she never looked at the clock.

After the oaths and the verdict that efforts scatter, the surah names the first direction. 'As for the one who gives and guards himself'.

It is natural to ask why God would ask anyone to give away what they worked for. Does He need it? The Quran answers that directly elsewhere. 'Allah is the Rich, and you are the poor' (47:38). He does not need the gift, and He does not need the giver.

The Prophet ﷺ described where the benefit lands. 'The upper hand is better than the lower hand' (Sahih al-Bukhari). He explained that the upper hand is the one that gives. In the same saying he added: whoever seeks to be free of need, Allah makes him free of need. The giving hand is raised, not emptied.

That matches something many people discover the hard way. A life spent only acquiring tends to feel thin, however full the account. Something in us was built to pass things on, and it starves when it never does. The lawyer did not find meaning in the advice she was paid for. She found it in the hour nobody could pay for.

Allah needs none of this (51:57). The command to give is a door He opens for us, out of the cramped room of the self. 'Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28). Giving for His sake is one of the ways the heart remembers Him with its hands.
