Al-Layl 92:2

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

“And [by] the day when it appears”

Saheeh International

Essence

When the day is unveiled, what the dark was hiding stands in plain view, and only its Maker decides when that unveiling comes.

A reflection

The wall you painted by lamplight

A man spends an evening painting his front room by the light of a standing lamp. At midnight he steps back, pleased. Smooth, even, finished. At eight the next morning the sun comes through the window and falls across the wall. Every streak shows. So does the patch by the door he missed entirely.

Tajallā means to be uncovered and shown clearly. The Arabs used this root for kohl clearing the eye, and for a bride unveiled before her people. One sense was harsher: jalāʾ, people driven out of their homes into the open, exposed. The day is not switched on in this ayah. It is unveiled, and when it is, the world is shown as it is.

That is uncomfortable for the ego, which prefers its own lighting. We present the finished version: the edited photograph, the account of the argument where we were reasonable, the CV with the gap smoothed over. Under lamps we choose, our walls look fine. But the day is not ours to aim. It rises on the palace and the bedsit at the hour set for it. It shows what is there, not what we arranged. Pride survives on controlling what is seen, and every morning Allah reminds us how little of that we control.

Does God need His works admired? The day answers for itself. He did not light it for His own eyes. One classical commentary on this oath lists who wakes into it. The birds leave their nests, the creatures leave their hiding places, and people go out to earn their bread. The light is for them. And the Prophet ﷺ said Allah's hand is full; spending through the night and the day does not lessen it (Sahih al-Bukhari). A Giver whose giving never reduces Him gains nothing from our applause. We gain the morning.
