“For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease [i.e., relief].”

Essence
Ease does not only come after hardship; it is already travelling with it.
A reflection
With, not after
Ask almost anyone to quote this ayah and you will hear: after hardship comes ease. It is printed on fridge magnets and typed into sympathy messages. It is how most of us carry it.
The word is not 'after'. It is maʿa: with. Fa-inna maʿa l-ʿusri yusrā: so truly, with the hardship is ease.
The Quran does have an 'after' ayah. In 65:7, Allah will bring ease after hardship, baʿda ʿusrin yusrā. Both are true. But the line the world reaches for in its worst hour says something stranger. The ease is not waiting at the end of the tunnel. It is in the tunnel.
The classical scholars felt how strange that is. Ease and hardship are opposites, one of them asked; how can they be together? The answers are worth holding. One: the ease is so near and so certain that Allah speaks of it as already present, to steady the heart. Another takes with at its word. No one in hardship, it says, is without some kind of ease inside it. At the very least, something worse was held back. And with Allah there is always something worse than what came.
Think of that fridge magnet again, and turn it over in your hand. 'After' asks you to wait. 'With' asks you to look.
The small word changes what you do in the hard week. You stop only counting down. You start searching the week itself for what was sent with it.
