Ash-Sharh 94:4

وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ

“And raised high for you your repute.”

Saheeh International

Essence

No one can raise their own name for long; He raised His Prophet's, and joined it to His own.

A reflection

Who decides whose name lasts?

Wa-rafaʿnā laka dhikrak: and We raised your name for you.

Think of the work people put into raising their own names. Personal brands. Follower counts. The building with your name over the door. Most names fade within a generation or two. Few of us could name all our great-grandparents.

This ayah takes the pen out of our hands. Renown that lasts is given, not grabbed. The ego that strains for a name is climbing a ladder with no wall behind it.

Now look at the scale of what was given. One classical commentator lists it. His name beside Allah's in the testimony of faith, the call to prayer and the sitting of every prayer. His name in the books of earlier prophets. Obedience to him counted as obedience to Allah (4:80). Followers in every land sending blessings on him and keeping his way. An early explanation of the ayah puts it in one line: I am not mentioned without you being mentioned with Me.

Is God boasting of His power to make people famous? The raising adds nothing to Him. It was done for a mocked man, and shown to us so that we stop straining.

Pride says: make a name for yourself. This ayah answers quietly: names are His to raise.
