At-Takathur 102:6
لَتَرَوُنَّ ٱلْجَحِيمَ
“You will surely see the Hellfire.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Behind these two words stands an unspoken oath: the fire that greed kindles inside will one day be seen with open eyes.
A reflection
Coals heaped on coals
Jaḥīm was not an abstract word to the first hearers. It meant a great fire in a pit: fire stacked on fire, coal heaped on coal, the flames climbing over one another. A lion's two eyes were called its jaḥmatān, for their steady burning. The worst of a battle was its jāḥim.
And there was one more use. A man who burned inside with greed and meanness was said to tajaḥḥama.
Read that beside the first ayah of this surah. The race for more is itself a fire that feeds on what you throw into it. The new phone makes the old one feel shameful. The bigger house makes the street feel small. The pay rise sets the next target. Every log added makes the blaze hotter, never calmer. Anyone who has refreshed a shopping basket at midnight knows the heat.
That is the strange thing about this kind of fire. We feed it hoping it will die down, as if one more purchase or one more achievement will finally satisfy it. The lexicons describe the opposite: fire stacked on fire. Each thing thrown in becomes more fuel.
The surah opened with a distraction and now names where it leads. The fire that was burning inside all along will one day stand outside, and be seen. One classical commentary sees exactly this in the ayah's structure. What was left vague in 'you will come to know' is now made plain: this is what you will know.
The time to stop feeding it is now, while it is still small enough to smother. Not by a heroic renunciation, but by refusing the next log. One purchase not made, one comparison not pursued, one evening given to something that does not burn.
