وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْحُطَمَةُ
“And what can make you know what is the Crusher?”

Essence
Some things cannot be researched, only revealed, and the Quran pauses here to tell you that the Fire is one of them.
A reflection
Where the hunt ends
Dirāya, the knowing in adrāka, is knowledge reached by skill and approach. Picture a hunter creeping behind his camel towards the game, working out where it is before he can see it. The lexicons use that very image.
We are brilliant hunters of knowledge. We read every review before booking a hotel. We compare mortgage rates, track parcels to the minute, forecast next week's weather. Then the Quran stops the hunt with a question: and what could make you know what the Crusher is?
It is not vagueness. The question magnifies the thing, as the classical commentators say. One puts it precisely: it shows that this is not among the matters the minds of creatures can reach. No stalking, however skilled, will bring you close enough to see it.
Notice who is addressed. Early commentators take the 'you' to be the Prophet ﷺ himself: what has made you aware, O Messenger? The one closest to revelation is told, not left to work it out. If he learns this by being told, so do we.
The same question appears across the Quran's shortest surahs, each time before something enormous. It is asked of the Night of Decree (97:2) and the Striking Hour (101:3). It is asked of the Day of Sorting (77:14), the steep pass (90:12) and the register called Sijjīn (83:8). The greatest gift and the greatest terrors share it. All are bigger than our measuring tools.
Faced with any of them, the right posture is the same. Stop guessing, and listen. The very next ayah gives the answer, in three words. It is enough to act on, and more than enough to take seriously.
