Al-Humazah 104:4

كَلَّا ۖ لَيُنۢبَذَنَّ فِى ٱلْحُطَمَةِ

“No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.[1988]”

Saheeh International

Essence

One word, kallā, ends the illusion, and the man who cracked other people's dignity is flung, like something worthless, into the Crusher.

A reflection

The breaker meets the Crusher

Ḥuṭama has the same shape as humaza and lumaza: a pattern for something done by habit, with intensity. A classical note on this ayah spells out the design. The sin was described in a form showing it was rooted in him. So the threat uses a Fire named in the very same form, a Fire whose habit is crushing whatever is thrown in. The sin and its repayment are balanced in the sound of the words.

The root is the breaking of dry, brittle things: bones, old stalks crumbled into chaff. The Quran uses the same root for the green growth of this world, which dries, yellows and becomes ḥuṭām, chaff (57:20). A drought year that broke everything was called ḥuṭama. The man who counted his money was counting future chaff.

One classical commentator lays out the correspondence. The hāmiz narrows his eye at someone to lower him and cast him down. So behind him is the ḥuṭama, which breaks him and casts him to the bottom. But his breaking was only with an eyebrow. This breaking leaves nothing.

Hold those pictures up to modern life. The investor who strips a company bare and walks away. The troll who crushes a teenager's confidence in an afternoon. Each thinks of himself as the one who does the breaking. The ayah says he has misread his place.

Abu Dawud reports a hadith, graded ṣaḥīḥ, about the Prophet's ﷺ night journey. He passed people with nails of copper, scratching their own faces and chests. He asked who they were. They were those who ate people's flesh and attacked their honour. What they did to others is done back to them, in kind.

There is justice in this that the wronged can hold on to. Nothing broken by a sneer is forgotten. The measure is kept, and it is kept exactly.
