Al-Fil 105:3

وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ

“And He sent against them birds in flocks,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Against an elephant and an army, He sent birds: small, many, arriving flock after flock from every side.

A reflection

The smallest soldiers

Ṭayran: birds, with no 'the' and no description. One classical reading offers two ways to hear that bareness. It may be kept small on purpose: the smaller the instrument, the more astonishing the work of the One who sends it. Or it may be kept vast: birds, and what birds, throwing tiny stones that never missed.

An army had marched with an elephant at its head. It had beaten the tribes that stood in its way. It was stopped by birds the reports compare to swallows, creatures you could hold in one hand.

Think of a jet grounded by a single bird in its engine, or a city brought to a halt by something too small to see. We measure power by size: the taller building, the louder voice, the bigger following. The ego is a worshipper of size. It assumes that whoever is largest must be in charge, and it wants very much to be large.

This ayah quietly retires that measure. Allah needs no elephant to defeat an elephant. He needed no army at all. He chose the lightest thing that flies.

That can be frightening to the proud. It can also be the best news a small person ever hears. If size is not power, then your smallness is not weakness before Him, and your pride in your size is not strength. The office junior, the child, the elderly neighbour, the person with no platform: none of them is small in the only scale that matters.

Why does Allah display His power like this? Not to be admired; He is free of any need for our praise. It is so that we stop being impressed by the wrong things. Whoever has seen an army undone by swallows will find it harder to kneel to any merely large thing again.
