Al-Fil · Makki · ayah 4 of 5

Al-Fil 105:4

تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

“Striking them with stones of hard clay,”

Saheeh International

Essence

A pebble the size of a chickpea is harmless, until the One who made stone decides otherwise.

A reflection

No armour thick enough

The reports describe the stones as bigger than a lentil and smaller than a chickpea. Each bird carried three: one in its beak and two in its feet. Against helmets and shields, that sounds like nothing.

Yet the reports say a stone could strike a soldier's helmet and pass straight through him. Some add that a wind came behind the stones and drove them harder. Notice the verb, too: tarmīhim, they pelt them, in the present tense. The commentators say it brings the scene before your eyes. The ayah does not tell it as distant history. It replays it.

We spend so much on armour. Alarm systems and gated drives. Insurance for everything. Reputations polished until nothing sticks. Some of that is wise, and the believer takes sensible precautions. But the ego quietly adds a belief of its own: I am untouchable.

Arrogance is often just the feeling of being well protected. The army that marched on Makkah felt it. It had beaten every tribe on the road. It had the largest animal anyone had seen. It had the backing of an empire. Nothing on the ground could touch it. So the answer came from above, in the smallest possible form.

This ayah punctures that feeling with a pebble. Nothing is heavy or light, strong or weak, except by the measure of the One who made it. Stone obeys Him; so does the helmet it passes through.

Real safety, then, is not being out of reach. No one is. It is being on the right side of the One who can reach anything. The humble person who knows that sleeps more soundly than the proud one behind three locks, because his safety was never in the locks.
