Al-An'am 6:162

قُلْ إِنَّ صَلَاتِى وَنُسُكِى وَمَحْيَاىَ وَمَمَاتِى لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

“Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allāh, Lord of the worlds.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The ayah starts with the prayer mat and the sacrifice, and then hands Allah the whole of a life, and the death that ends it.

A reflection

Worship does not stop at the prayer mat

Many people hear this ayah as a sentence about rituals. Prayer and sacrifice: the things done on the prayer mat and on the day of Eid. It is quoted at the slaughter of the animal, and recited in the opening of the prayer. So it is filed under 'worship', meaning ritual.

Read the four nouns in order. My prayer. My sacrifice. My living. My dying. The first two are acts of worship in the narrow sense. The second two are not acts at all. They are the whole span of a life and its end.

That is the ayah's correction of a narrow first image. Worship is not a department of life. One commentary reads 'my living' as whatever I do in my life, and 'my dying' as the faith and good deeds I die upon. All of it, purely for Allah. Another notes that the ayah first taught the straight religion, and now teaches how to carry it out: with sincerity, in everything.

Picture a sign-language interpreter at a primary school parents' evening. A deaf father sits with his daughter's teacher. The interpreter catches every nuance: the teacher's hesitation before 'struggling', the warmth in 'kind to others'. She gets it right because a father deserves to know his child. Nobody in the room thinks of it as worship. By this ayah's measure, it can be.

The ayah does not lower prayer by placing it beside ordinary life. It raises ordinary life by placing it beside prayer.

Tomorrow, pick one ordinary task you will do anyway. Before you start, say quietly: this too is for Allah. Then do it as if it were.
