Adh-Dhariyat 51:49
وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ
“And of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Everything comes with its counterpart, heat and cold, night and day, so that we remember the One who makes both and needs no partner.
A reflection
The Maker of a thing and its opposite
One great early commentator, weighing the different readings of this ayah, preferred the widest. Allah created, for everything He created, a second thing that differs from it. Night and day. Guidance and error. Heaven and earth. And then he explained why this matters, with an argument that is worth slowing down for.
Fire, he said, can only heat. It cannot cool. Snow can only cool. It cannot heat. Anything that can produce only one kind of effect cannot be described as perfect. Perfect praise belongs to the One able to make whatever He wills, the thing and its opposite, the alike and the unlike.
Now apply that to ourselves. Think of a celebrated heart surgeon. In theatre his hands are extraordinary. At home he cannot boil an egg without burning the pan, and has never changed a tyre. His gift is real and narrow. Like the fire, he does one thing.
Most of our pride rests on something like that: one talent, one success, one area where we shine. We forget that it is a single narrow channel. Every human strength comes paired with a weakness somewhere else. And even that one strength was given.
The ayah sets that narrowness beside the One who made both heat and cold, both the morning and the night. Nothing limits Him to one kind of act. That is not a boast. It is a fact about what kind of Being He is, offered so that we can place our own gifts correctly.
Why does He tell us? Not because He needs our admiration. The ayah ends: 'so that you may remember'. The benefit of remembering is ours. It humbles the proud specialist in each of us, and frees us to be grateful for our one channel without pretending it is the ocean.
