An-Nas 114:5

ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ

“Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind -”

Saheeh International

Essence

The whisper arrives in the chest, the lobby of the heart; it may knock, but it only moves in if you open the door.

A reflection

The lobby and the room

The ayah does not say the whisperer speaks in people's hearts. It says in their ṣudūr, their chests. In Arabic the ṣadr is the front and first part of anything. It is the head of a gathering, the opening of a letter, the early hours of the day. Whatever faces you is ṣadr.

The sources build a picture of a house on this. The chest is the courtyard of the heart, its entrance hall. Everything that arrives gathers there first, and only then enters the heart or is turned away. Traffic runs the other way too. Decisions leave the heart, pass through the chest, and are handed out to the limbs, like orders to soldiers. So the whisperer takes up position in the hall, where everything passes. The Quran keeps the two rooms distinct: Allah tests what is in your chests and purifies what is in your hearts (3:154).

That distinction can change a life. A thought arriving is not the same as a thought accepted. You did not choose what walked into the hall. You do choose whether to show it into the room, offer it a seat and feed it.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that Allah has overlooked what the selves of this community whisper to them. The condition: that they do not act on it or speak it. One wording in Sahih al-Bukhari uses this ayah's own two words: what their chests have whispered. It is one of the most widely carried reports on the subject. Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Mājah record it too, all graded ṣaḥīḥ. The hall is not held against you. What you do next is yours.

Some hear that and worry the other way. If whispers pour in all day, am I responsible for anything at all? The answer is a boundary, not an excuse. You are not answerable for the knock at the door. You are answerable for opening it, and for how long you keep the guest.

Picture the security desk in a busy office building. People stream through the revolving door all day, and the guard does not choose who walks into the lobby. He chooses who gets a pass for the lifts. Nobody blames him for the crowd. Everyone would blame him for handing out passes without looking.
