Yusuf 12:14

قَالُوا۟ لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ ٱلذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّخَـٰسِرُونَ

“They said, "If a wolf should eat him while we are a [strong] clan, indeed, we would then be losers."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The brothers swear that if a wolf took him from ten strong men, they would be losers; by nightfall they will claim exactly that.

A reflection

They passed sentence on themselves

It is easy to read this ayah as one more lie in a chain of lies. The brothers reassure their father; their words are hollow; move on.

The grammar asks us to stop. The commentaries explain that the opening la- marks an oath that is understood but not spoken. By Allah, if the wolf eats him while we are a band, then we are surely losers. They are not merely promising. They are swearing.

Now follow the oath forward a single day. That night they will stand before their father and say: the wolf ate him (12:17). They will claim, in other words, that the condition of their own oath came true. And by the oath they swore, that makes them losers. They named the verdict in advance, and then they declared themselves guilty of it.

That is a strange mercy in the surah's telling. Nobody else has to judge the brothers. They do it with their own mouths, and the Qur'an simply records both halves.

The pattern is not rare. We often pronounce our own standard loudly, in order to be believed. If I ever did that, I would deserve to lose everything. Then, later, we do it. The words we used to win trust become the words that convict us.

The ayah is a warning about the oaths we swear to get permission. They do not disappear when the permission is granted. They wait. And when the day comes, they are already written in our own voice.

The brothers wanted their father's belief. They got it, at the cost of signing their own sentence. Most of the loss in this surah is self-inflicted in exactly that way.
