Yusuf 12:17

“They said, "O our father, indeed we went racing each other and left Joseph with our possessions, and a wolf ate him. But you would not believe us, even if we were truthful."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The brothers' story is carefully built to answer every objection in advance, and it ends by accusing their father of not believing them.

A reflection

A well-built lie, not a clumsy one

We tend to remember the brothers' story as a clumsy lie. A wolf, of all things, the very animal their father had named. Surely anyone could see through it.

The commentaries take it more seriously, and they are right to. One calls the last line a great subtlety in establishing what they were attempting. Another walks through the whole account and shows how each clause shuts a door before their father can open it.

Why were you apart from him? We went off racing. That was training, and expected of grown men. Did you abandon him? No, we left him by our things. One commentary explains the force of that: people only leave their belongings where they feel safe. So we left him in our own base, within sight, for only a short while. Then how? The wolf ate him: the very danger you yourself named. And if you doubt us? That is because you never trusted us, not because we are lying.

Every likely question has an answer ready. It is not a clumsy lie. It is a prepared one.

That should make us more careful, not less. We comfort ourselves that liars give themselves away. Often they do not, at least not in their words. A well-rehearsed account can be smooth, consistent and plausible, and still false.

What undoes it, in this surah, is not the story. It is a piece of evidence nobody thought about: a shirt that should have been torn and was not. The next ayah brings it in.

So the lesson is double. Do not assume a lie will sound like one. And do not assume the truth needs a better speaker. It only needs one fact that does not fit.
