Yusuf 12:16

وَجَآءُوٓ أَبَاهُمْ عِشَآءً يَبْكُونَ

“And they came to their father at night, weeping.”

Saheeh International

Essence

In four words they come to their father at a chosen hour, with performed tears, and one name missing from the sentence.

A reflection

Tears are not testimony

We are built to believe tears. A person weeping in front of us seems to be showing us the inside of their heart. It feels cold, almost cruel, to doubt them.

This ayah is where the commentaries stop that instinct. One says plainly that it is evidence that weeping does not prove the truth of what a person says. It may be put on. Some people can do it, it adds, and some cannot. Another describes the brothers as making a show of weeping, with effort, because it was not from grief though it resembled it. The lexicons even keep a separate word for it: tabākī, putting weeping on when there is no grief behind it.

The commentaries preserve a famous moment from early Islam. A woman came before a judge in a dispute and wept. Someone said to him: do you not see her weeping? The judge replied: Yusuf's brothers came to their father weeping, and they were wrongdoers. A judge must rule only by what he has been commanded to rule by. One early scholar put it even more bluntly: after Yusuf's brothers, no one who weeps is believed for his weeping alone.

This is not cynicism. The same commentary quotes a poet's counterweight. When tears run together on the cheeks, it becomes clear who wept and who pretended.

A public figure posts a tearful apology video. It is watched by millions; the comments are full of forgiveness. Ten days later the documents show he knew for years.

The ayah does not ask you to harden your heart. It asks you to keep your judgement. Be moved by tears. Decide on evidence.
