Al-Fath · Madani · ayah 2 of 29
Al-Fath 48:2
“That Allāh may forgive for you what preceded of your sin [i.e., errors] and what will follow and complete His favor upon you and guide you to a straight path”

Essence
The gift for that turned-back journey was not praise but cover: forgiveness behind, a favour completed around, and a straight road ahead.
A reflection
The highest award is a covering
The previous ayah spoke with 'We': We have opened. This one names its Giver outright: li-yaghfira laka Allāh, so that Allah may forgive you. One commentator suggests why. An opening comes about through many hands and means. Forgiveness He takes on Himself, directly.
Now look at who receives it. The most honoured human being who ever lived has just led a journey of faith and restraint. And the first thing named as his reward is not praise for what he achieved. It is forgiveness.
That should sit the ego down hard. Imagine an awards dinner. The lifetime achievement winner walks up and takes the plaque. He reads the engraving aloud: 'Your faults are covered.' The room would not know where to look. We expect awards to list what we did. This ayah's highest award speaks of what is hidden.
The root shows what kind of hiding. Ghafr is covering. The mighfar was the mail hood worn under a helmet, falling over the neck. It hid the head and took the blow meant for it. So Allah's forgiveness does two things. It hides the fault, and it shields the person from what the fault would otherwise bring.
If the best of creation is honoured with a covering, then none of us arrives at Allah carrying a portfolio. We arrive needing to be covered.
A doubt follows naturally. Does a God who forgives as a favour, then expects thanks, need His servants' gratitude? Look at the transaction. Forgiving costs the Forgiver nothing He lacks, and gains Him nothing He needs. The Quran says so plainly: you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Rich, the Praised (35:15). The only one who profits from the hood is the head inside it.
This is the King speaking, and what He chooses to announce first is shelter. Pride wants a trophy. The ayah hands over a helmet.
