Ar-Ra'd 13:42
“And those before them had plotted, but to Allāh belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home.”

Essence
Those before them plotted too, yet every plot belongs to Him, who knows what each soul earns.
A reflection
The plot that only He truly owns
An online investor built an elaborate scheme over several years. Fabricated returns, a constant supply of new money paying off the old, every document and testimonial were carefully arranged to survive a casual check. It very nearly worked. It came apart not because investigators finally outsmarted him. One early, unremarkable complaint, filed and then quietly shelved years before anyone took it seriously, was reopened by a new team working through a backlog. They had better tools than the ones that first dismissed it.
Makr is the word for exactly this kind of move: a plan worked hard in secret to turn someone from what they intended. The lexicons note it cuts both ways. It is a plotter's snare when the intent is harmful, or a counter-plan that turns a plot back on its own author. This ayah uses the same word for both sides at once. Those before them plotted too, and to Allah belongs the plotting, all of it.
A fair question sits inside that sentence. Every plot, theirs and anyone's, ultimately belongs to Allah. Does that make Him the author of the evil behind it? Or does it make a person's own effort to resist scheming pointless either way? Neither follows. The very next clause answers it directly: He knows what every soul earns. The word for earns, kasb, names something a person genuinely does and owns, going out and gathering it for themselves, good or ill. Allah's encompassing power over every plot, including the counter-move that finally undoes one, does not erase the plotter's authorship of their own scheme. It simply means no scheme is ever the last word, because the real ledger was never the plotter's to keep.
What should shrink in anyone reading this is the quiet self-importance behind every secret scheme. It is the private sense of being clever enough to write the ending oneself. The investor believed, for years, that he held the pen. He never did.
