Al-Isra 17:12

“And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible[731] that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail.”

Essence

Night and day are two signs: the night wiped dark for rest, the day made to see, so you may earn and count your years.

A reflection

Two hundred people waiting for the sun

On a beach, a film crew of two hundred people stands waiting. The lights are rigged, the actors are dressed, and the budget runs to thousands of pounds an hour. Everyone is waiting for the same thing: the twenty minutes after sunset when the light turns soft and gold. The director can fire anyone on that beach. He cannot bring the sun down one minute sooner.

Wa-jaʿalnā al-layla wa-l-nahāra āyatayn: and We made the night and the day two signs. The verb is in the plural of majesty. The making is His, and the ayah does not pause to argue it. It simply says who turns the lights of the world off and on.

One classical commentator lists what makes them signs. Each arrives from where no one knows and leaves for where no one knows. One shortens as the other lengthens. Light and darkness take turns without a gap and without a quarrel. Another commentator finds the argument inside the alternation. Two opposites that follow each other for ever cannot be running themselves. Something orders them and measures them out.

The Quran presses the point elsewhere. Consider: if Allah made the night continuous over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allah could bring you light (28:71)? And if He made the day endless, who could bring you a night to rest in (28:72)?

This is where the ego shrinks to its true size. We schedule, optimise and talk about owning our time. Not one of us has produced a single second of daylight. Every clock on earth only reports work that Someone else is doing. The director knows it every evening on that beach. The arrogance that thinks it runs its own days is harmless as a joke. It is dangerous as a belief.

Does Allah tell us this because He wants to be praised? One commentary gives the purpose differently. He set it out so that people would thank Him and make their worship His alone. And thanks benefits the one who gives it: whoever is grateful is grateful for his own good (27:40). The Lord of the night and day needs nothing from us (35:15). It is the person who sees whose hand turns the sky who is changed.
