Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 45 of 111
Al-Isra 17:45
“And when you recite the Qur’ān, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition.[749]”

Essence
When the Quran is recited, Allah sets a barrier between the reciter and those who deny the Hereafter, hidden even from them.
A reflection
Measured by the clever, drunk by the thirsty
The ayah does not say a barrier appears. It says jaʿalnā: We placed it. The One who sends the Quran down also decides who is reached by it.
That is a humbling sentence for anyone proud of his mind. We assume understanding is a matter of capacity. Read enough, learn enough grammar, and any text will open. With most books that is true. With this one it is not.
Picture a water inspector at a desert well. She lowers her test kit and records the salts, the hardness, the temperature. Beside her, a shepherd who has walked for two days kneels and drinks. She knows far more about the water. He is the one it was drawn for.
The Quran can be measured like that well. Only need drinks from it. Notice whom the barrier falls on. Not on those who lack grammar, but on 'those who do not believe in the Hereafter': those who came without thirst.
An early master of the inner life asked his students what this barrier was. His answer was the veil of Allah's protective jealousy. Allah did not make those who refused Him fit to grasp His speech, so He screened it from them.
Is that arrogance on His part, a God hoarding His words? A human who hoards knowledge does it to stay above others. Allah gains nothing by being understood and loses nothing when He is not. He is free of need of all the worlds (29:6). The guarding is for the honour of what is guarded, and it falls only on those who had already turned away.
This is where the ego has to bow. My degree, my fluency and my years of reading do not unlock this book. So the honest first move, each time the mushaf opens, is a request: not 'let me master this', but 'let me in'.
