Al-Isra 17:49

وَقَالُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا كُنَّا عِظَـٰمًا وَرُفَـٰتًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ خَلْقًا جَدِيدًا

“And they say, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected as a new creation?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Picturing their own bones crumbled to dust, the deniers asked if they would really rise as a new creation, and thought the question settled it.

A reflection

Dust in the palm

The question names two stages of decay. First ʿiẓām, bones. Then rufāt, and the second word is the sharper picture.

The lexicons say the root means crushing a thing until it breaks into small, scattered pieces. They give the example of old clay, or a decayed bone, crumbling in the hand. One classical lexicographer adds that crushed straw was called by the same name. Early commentators gloss it here as dust, or as fine powder carried on the air.

So the deniers are not offering a theory. They are holding something. Picture a man at the edge of a field after a dry summer. He picks up a clod of earth, rubs it between finger and thumb, and opens his hand. A little brown powder sits in the creases of his palm. He blows, and it is gone.

That is the image inside their question. This, they say. When we are this, are we really to be raised?

One classical commentator saw exactly what was driving the doubt. It was the felt clash between two textures. The living are soft, moist, held together. The decayed are dry, brittle and falling apart. To the senses they seem to belong to different worlds. Surely nothing could carry a thing from the second back to the first.

The insight is that the objection is a sensation before it is an argument. It persuades the hand before it persuades the mind.

The surah answers in the next ayah by raising the stakes. Be stone, then, or iron (17:50): harder and further from life than any bone. If the One who made you can bring those to life, a palmful of dust is no obstacle. The feeling is real. It simply measures the wrong thing.
