۞ قُلْ كُونُوا۟ حِجَارَةً أَوْ حَدِيدًا

“Say, "Be you stones or iron[751]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Dust, they scoffed, could never live; the reply raised the stakes: be stone or iron, and you are still within His reach.

A reflection

A dare that tells the truth

Kūnū: be. It is a command, but not one anyone can obey. Nobody becomes stone by trying. The commentators call it a command of challenge, the kind that exposes inability rather than asking for action. Say to them, the ayah tells the Prophet ﷺ: go on, then. Be stone. Be iron.

The deniers had just pictured themselves as dust, too far gone to be gathered (17:49). The reply does not argue about dust. It hands them the two hardest things in their world: the rock of the hills and the iron of their swords. Choose the most unreachable form you can imagine, it says, and you will still not have left His hand.

One classical scholar unpacked it with an everyday picture. It is like a man saying to someone already in his grip: climb up to the sky, and I will catch you there. And he noticed a second edge. If you had no Maker, why were you not made of something death cannot touch, like stone or iron? You were not. Someone chose for you a soft, perishable frame. You did not even choose your own material.

That is where the ego shrinks. We describe ourselves in the language of this ayah. Nerves of steel. Iron will. Rock solid. Picture a retired scaffolder with HARD inked across his knuckles at nineteen. At seventy-four he climbs his own stairs with both hands on the banister, one step at a time. The letters have faded to blue smudges. He was never hard. He was held.

A sceptic may hear arrogance in the dare: a power taunting weak creatures. But a taunt is meant to humiliate, and this is meant to wake. Allah gains nothing from their admission (35:15). The dare simply tells them now, while it can still help, what the Day will tell them anyway. There is no form, no wall and no hardness in which a human can hide from his Maker. That is not bad news for anyone who stops trying to hide.
