Al-Kahf 18:107

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise[803] as a lodging,”

Saheeh International

Essence

The word for their lodging is the one used five verses earlier for Hell, and a narration-based commentary reads it as hospitality.

A reflection

The shade you will sit in

The word for Gardens comes from a root that is not about beauty at all.

The lexicons give it as something covered. A garden is from this root because the trees are thick enough to shade you. The same letters give the child hidden in the womb, beings hidden from sight, and a shield you stand behind.

So the word is about cover, and the first thing it promises is shelter.

Which is worth setting beside what the chapter said seventeen verses ago. We had not made for them, against the sun, any screen.

The poorest people in the surah had no cover. The promise at the end of it is a cover so thick it is named for the covering.

And this is where it becomes concrete that worship is for the worshipper.

A man plants a shelter belt along the windward edge of his land. It takes thirty years to do anything. He is doing the planting; he is also the one who will sit in the lee of it.

Nobody else benefits in the way he does, and he was never doing the landowner a favour.

The verse names two things done: they believed, and they worked soundly. Neither is a payment. Allah says plainly elsewhere that He has no need of the worlds, and that gratitude is for the grateful man's own soul.

So what the verse describes is not a wage for services. It is the thing the work was always growing into.

And the modern hunger this answers is not a hunger for reward. It is the exhaustion of effort that goes nowhere: the work that is used up, the years that leave nothing standing.

The verse answers it with a word for cover.

Whatever has been planted is going to be shade, and the one who planted it is the one who will be sitting under it.
