Ali 'Imran 3:198

“But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allāh. And that which is with Allāh is best for the righteous.”

Essence

Gardens to stay in, described not as wages but as the hospitality a host sets out for an arriving guest.

A reflection

Not wages: a supper laid out for a guest

The ayah does not call the Gardens a payment. It calls them nuzul, and the lexicons are exact about what that word was.

Its root is coming down from a height. A rider came down off his mount at the end of a journey and set his baggage on the ground. The place was his manzil, he was a nazīl, a guest, and what the hosts brought out for him, already prepared, was his nuzul. One commentary defines it in four words: what is made ready for the guest. Another calls it hospitality from Allah. An old verse quoted in the lexicons says the guest has the greatest right of anyone.

So picture the sequence. The travelling is over, the load is off, and the food was prepared before you arrived.

A woman drives four hours to a rented cottage in February with two tired children and a car full of bags. She has the key code and expects a cold house. What she finds is the stove lit, a loaf on the board and milk in the fridge. There is a note with a mobile number on it, in handwriting. She will remember that house for twenty years, and if you ask her why she will talk about the milk.

The cost of what was left out was almost nothing. The meaning of it was enormous, because it had been done in advance, by someone thinking about her arrival before she arrived.

That is the word this ayah uses. Not a wage that matches your hours. Hospitality, prepared ahead, by a Host who knew you were coming.

And notice what it does to the whole register. A wage puts you in a transaction and invites you to check the arithmetic. A supper laid out for a guest puts you in somebody's house, with the door open and the bags still in the hall.
