Al-Kahf 18:50
“And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees. He was of the jinn and departed from [i.e., disobeyed] the command of his Lord. Then will you take him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you? Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange.”

Essence
Wretched is the exchange, in a word picturing a signet melted down and recast as a plain band: the same gold, the seal gone.
A reflection
A pride nobody could see
One commentary passes on an early account of what happened before the refusal. He had been given a great deal. Standing, responsibility, a place among the highest. And because of it, something settled in his heart that nobody knew about except Allah.
Then came the command to prostrate, and Allah drew that thing out of him.
Read the sequence carefully, because it is not the story we usually tell. The pride did not begin with the command. The command revealed it. It had been sitting there, undetected, through years of exemplary service, in somebody whose devotion was visible to everybody.
That is the uncomfortable mechanism in this verse, and it has nothing to do with devils. A single instruction, placed at exactly the right angle, brought out what twenty years of worship had not shown.
There is a man who held a title for two decades and then gave it up, properly and willingly. He is unfailingly pleasant. He also cannot be in a room for twenty minutes without finding a way to say what he used to be. He would be genuinely surprised to be told, because nothing in him feels proud, and he was never once arrogant while he held the post.
The post was not holding the pride down. It was covering it.
And the last word of the verse puts the whole thing in one image. The lexicons give the root of exchange as a signet ring melted down and recast as a plain band. The same gold. The seal gone.
That is what the self does to itself when it will not bow. Nothing is lost in weight. The mark that made it worth something is no longer on it.
