Al-Kahf 18:94
“They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog[798] are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"”

Essence
The people who could barely be understood name the problem, offer to pay for it, and propose the remedy, in one sentence.
A reflection
What the sources actually establish about them
Two names appear here and almost everything attached to them in popular retelling is not in the Qur'an.
So here is the ground that holds.
They are human beings, descended from Adam. A narration-based commentary states it and cites the two Sahihs. There the Prophet names two nations among the children of Adam who have never been in anything without making it more numerous.
They are corrupters in the land. The verse says so.
A barrier was built between them and these people. It could not be climbed or breached. And it will be levelled when the promise of Allah comes.
That is the whole of it.
Now the material the commentaries carry and then handle carefully. Faces, heights, ears used as bedding, a thousand descendants each. A narration-based commentary calls the long accounts strange and objectionable. Some of the reports in this area, it says, have chains that do not stand.
It also rejects, in plain terms, the claim that they came from Adam without Hawwa. It calls that very strange and says there is no proof for it from reason or transmission. It warns against relying on what some of the People of the Book relate, because of the invented reports among them.
An insurance surveyor arrives to look at a roof. Within ten minutes he has been given four theories about the neighbours and nothing about the roof. He writes down what he can see, and the four theories do not reach the report.
That discipline is not coldness. It is the only way a report stays worth anything.
And there is a particular cost when this verse gets filled in. End-times speculation moves fast and sells well, and every detail added makes the passage less about the reader.
The verse is not describing monsters. It is describing a people living next to a danger, who asked for help.
