Maryam 19:10
“[Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."[811]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Zakariya asked for a sign and was given a silence: three nights unable to speak to anyone, though nothing at all was wrong with him.
A reflection
The best news of his life, and no one to tell
We tend to picture a sign from Allah as something added. A light, a voice, a wonder that others can see.
Zakariya asks for a sign, and what he is given is a subtraction. For three nights he will not be able to speak to people. And the last word makes the point precise: sawiyyā, while you are sound. The commentaries are almost unanimous here. Nothing would be wrong with him. No illness, no muteness, no injury. He would be entirely well, and still unable to address anyone.
One classical commentator explains why that matters. A tongue that simply stops working could be put down to sickness. A tongue that cannot speak to people, yet can still remember Allah and recite the Torah, could only be Allah's doing. So the sign was built to rule out every ordinary explanation.
Now picture the human side of it. An old man has just been told, after a lifetime of waiting, that he will have a son. It is the best news he has ever received. And for three nights he cannot tell a single person.
A woman learns she is pregnant after nine years of trying. It is the week of her sister-in-law's mourning. She decides to tell no one until it passes. She makes tea, receives guests, smiles at the right moments, and carries the news inside her like a lamp under a cloth.
Zakariya carried his the same way, with one difference. He could not tell people, but he could still tell his Lord. The silence closed the door to everyone else and left one door wide open.
That is the sign. Not a spectacle. A man full to bursting, speaking only to the One who already knew.
