Ali 'Imran 3:41

“He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."”

Essence

Zakariyyā's sign was three days unable to speak to people except by gesture, while his tongue stayed free to remember and glorify his Lord.

A reflection

Silent to people, never silent to Him

A man recovering from throat surgery is told not to speak for three days. He carries a small whiteboard from room to room. By the second evening he notices how much of his usual talk was noise: commentary, complaint, repetition. Under the quiet, something steadier begins to surface.

Zakariyyā's sign was a silence. 'Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three days, except by gesture.' A concise commentary adds a precise detail. He was kept from speaking with people, but not from remembering Allah. Another notes he was in full health; nothing was wrong with him. His tongue was closed to the crowd and open to his Lord.

And the instruction that follows fills the silence: 'Remember your Lord much, and glorify Him in the evening and the morning'. The lexicons picture dhikr as a thread tied round the finger so that a need is not forgotten. It lives in two places, the heart and the tongue. Tasbīḥ declares Allah far above every flaw. Its letters also carry the image of swimming, of stars gliding in their orbits.

Allah needs none of this remembrance. He is free of all need (35:15). It is for us. Many people now live in a constant stream of talk, their own and everyone else's. They are rarely silent and rarely still, and they feel it as a low, persistent tiredness. The ayah describes a different kind of quiet. It is not empty. It is full of Him.

'Truly, in the remembrance of Allah hearts find rest' (13:28). You do not need surgery to try it. Close the stream for an hour, and let the tongue that is free to speak to Him do so.

The man with the whiteboard went back to talking eventually. But he kept the evenings quieter, and he knew whom he was talking to.
