Maryam · Makki · ayah 29 of 98

Maryam 19:29

فَأَشَارَتْ إِلَيْهِ ۖ قَالُوا۟ كَيْفَ نُكَلِّمُ مَن كَانَ فِى ٱلْمَهْدِ صَبِيًّا

“So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"”

Essence

Her whole defence is one gesture towards a newborn, and her people's reply is the most reasonable question in the room.

A reflection

Before the miracle, a pointed hand

Almost everyone knows the headline: the baby Isa spoke in the cradle. It is one of the most famous miracles in the Qur'an. Because it is famous, the ayah that sets it up is easy to skip. Yet the decisive act in this ayah is not his. It is hers.

Fa-ashārat ilayhi: so she pointed to him. That is all. Three words in Arabic, and the whole defence of an accused woman.

Think about what the gesture risked. She has been told she brought something monstrous. She has been compared, unfavourably, to her own father, mother and kin. And in answer she raises a hand towards a baby. If he says nothing, she has not merely failed to clear herself. She has, it seems, mocked them.

That is exactly how they took it. The commentaries preserve a report that they grew furious. 'Her making fools of us is worse to us than her fornication.' The gesture looked like contempt.

A Companion's comment, preserved in one commentary, explains it plainly. She had no argument of her own, so she pointed to him, so that his words would be her proof. A classical commentator asks how she could have known he would speak. He gives three possibilities. The voice beneath the palm had already told her to stay silent, which implied that someone else would answer. Or she knew it through revelation to Zakariyya. Or it was given to her directly, as an honour.

Whichever it was, the moment demanded trust that could be seen. Faith is easy to hold privately. Here it had to become a movement of the arm, in public, towards the least likely witness in the world.

The miracle that follows is his. The courage that opens the door to it is hers.
