Maryam 19:30
قَالَ إِنِّى عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِىَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِى نَبِيًّا
“[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.”

Essence
Asked to defend his mother, the newborn's first words defend his Lord instead, and in doing so clear her completely.
A reflection
His first words were not about his mother
Parents wait months for a first word. When it comes, it is written on the calendar and sent to every grandparent. It is usually a name, or a need: mama, milk, more.
Everyone knows that Isa spoke in the cradle. Far fewer have sat with what he actually said. The setting demanded one thing. His mother stood accused of the worst charge a woman could face. The crowd had just mocked her for pointing at him. If he spoke at all, surely he would say: my mother is innocent.
He did not say that. His first words were innī ʿabdu llāh: I am the servant of Allah.
One classical commentator asks why, and his answer is the key to the ayah. There were two accusations in the air that day. One was against his mother, of fornication. The other, still to come over centuries, was against Allah: that He had taken a son. The child answered the second first. Clearing Allah, the commentator says, was more pressing than clearing his mother.
And it did both. Allah does not single out the child of a sinful woman for a rank like this. So by declaring what Allah had made him, he declared what his mother was. Clearing his mother directly would not have cleared Allah. Clearing Allah cleared her too. Another commentator adds that this indirect honour to her was greater than a plain denial would have been.
The first hearers would have felt the surprise. A defence was expected; a creed arrived. Those in Makka who heard it had just been told, at the surah's opening, of 'His servant Zakariyya'. Now a newborn claims the same word for himself.
A baby's first word usually tells you what he needs. This one told them what he was.
