Maryam 19:31
وَجَعَلَنِى مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَـٰنِى بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّا
“And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I remain alive”
Saheeh International
Essence
A newborn describes a blessing that kneels wherever he does, and a charge of prayer and giving that will not end before his life does.
A reflection
Blessed does not mean lucky; it means useful
'Blessed' has become a soft word. People post it under holiday photos and new cars. It suggests favour that has landed on someone: good fortune, a glow, perhaps a halo in a painting. Most readers carry that picture into this ayah. Isa was blessed, the way a saint is blessed.
The early explanations point somewhere else entirely. One concise commentary glosses mubārakan as 'of great benefit to people'. An early authority said simply: very useful. Another said: a teacher of good, wherever I was. A later spiritual writer gathers these into one definition. The blessed one has much good in himself, and passes it on to others, by teaching, enabling, advising and striving.
The commentaries preserve a report that sharpens it further. A scholar met another, greater in learning, and asked what part of his own work he should make public. The answer: enjoining good and forbidding wrong. The scholar added that the jurists had agreed on this ayah. Asked what Isa's blessing was, they said: enjoining good and forbidding wrong, wherever he was.
So blessing in this ayah is not something that happens to you. It is something that happens through you. It is measured not by what you received, but by what others received because you were there.
Think of a woman who has moved offices four times in ten years. In every one, within a month, someone is in her room with the door shut, crying. They leave lighter. Her CV lists none of this. But ask any of those four offices what changed when she arrived.
That is mubārak. Not a glow around a person. A difference left behind them.
