Maryam 19:32

وَبَرًّۢا بِوَٰلِدَتِى وَلَمْ يَجْعَلْنِى جَبَّارًا شَقِيًّا

“And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.”

Saheeh International

Essence

In front of the people who accused her, a newborn names his mother, and only his mother, as the one he will honour.

A reflection

The defence hidden in one word: my mother

Most readers file this ayah under a familiar heading: be good to your parents. It is true, and it is taught to every child. But in this scene the sentence is doing something sharper, and the familiar heading hides it.

Remember where he is. His mother has just been accused, in front of her whole people, of bearing a child of shame. She has pointed to him. He has said he is the servant of Allah, given the Book, made a prophet. Now he says: and dutiful to my mother.

Not 'to my parents'. To my mother. An early report from a Companion, preserved in one commentary, notes it exactly. When he said 'my mother' and not 'my parents', it was known that he was something from Allah. One later commentator calls this sentence almost explicit that he had no father. Of everything he said, it points most clearly to her innocence.

A classical commentator adds a second line of reasoning. If she had been guilty, an infallible messenger would not have been commanded to honour her. The prophet's duty to her is itself a verdict on her.

Picture the crowd hearing it. A child they assumed had no honourable father has just named his only parent. He names her in the language of duty and reverence, in front of the very people who shamed her. The accusation said she had brought disgrace. Her son says she is the one he is bound to serve.

The lexicons picture birr as open land under a traveller's feet: wide, firm, spacious goodness. In that moment, the son became ground for his mother to stand on.
