Maryam 19:33

وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ عَلَىَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدتُّ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا

“And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."”

Saheeh International

Essence

The newborn ends his speech by naming his own death, and asking for peace at the three doorways every human must pass through.

A reflection

A newborn who names the day he will die

For many readers this ayah has worn into a formula. It sounds like a blessing, a gentle 'peace be upon him' spoken by the prophet himself. Some, more quietly, carry another picture: Isa as the one who did not really die, who stands outside the ordinary human story.

Listen to what the newborn actually says. Peace on me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive. He is a few hours old, and he names his death. He is a wonder in a cradle, and he places himself in the same three-part life as everyone in the crowd.

One commentary draws the conclusion directly. This is his affirmation of servanthood: he is a created being, who lives, dies and is raised like all other creatures. What he is given is safety in those three states, which are the hardest a servant ever faces. An early report adds that in these words he told them he had no father, that he would die, and that he would be raised.

Now hear it as its first audience did. Surah Maryam came down in Makka, to people who mocked the idea of rising after death. Later in this same surah, the doubter speaks: 'When I am dead, will I really be brought out alive?' (19:66). His question ends in the word ḥayyā, alive. So does Isa's sentence. A newborn affirms, in advance, exactly what the sceptic will scoff at.

The last words of the cradle speech are not about his glory. They are about his mortality, held inside peace.
