Maryam 19:34
ذَٰلِكَ عِيسَى ٱبْنُ مَرْيَمَ ۚ قَوْلَ ٱلْحَقِّ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ
“That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The story stops and a verdict begins: this, and nothing more or less, is Isa son of Maryam, the word of truth they still dispute.
A reflection
The climax is not a miracle but a name
Most readers feel the cradle scene peak at the miracle. A newborn speaks, the crowd falls silent, the mother is cleared. After that, the next ayah can feel like a footnote. But listen to how the voice changes.
Until now we have heard people speak: the angel, Maryam, her people, the child. Here, for the first time since the scene began, the narrator steps forward. One concise commentary renders it: that which We have related to you, O Messenger, about his description and his story, is Isa son of Maryam. The story is over. A verdict is being pronounced.
The verdict is a name. Dhālika ʿĪsā bnu Maryam: that is Isa, son of Maryam. One classical commentator notes what the name itself says. Son of Maryam: he is the child of this woman, her son, and not the son of God. The full name carries his mother where other names carry a father.
Notice too the word for 'that'. Arabic has a near pointer, hādhā, and a far one, dhālika. The ayah uses the far one. One commentary reads it as a sign of his high rank and lofty station. He is pointed to from a distance, as one looks up at something set apart.
So the ayah does two things at once. It raises him: that one, far above the slander of his mother's accusers. And it limits him: son of Maryam, not of anyone higher. Both exaggerations are closed in a single line.
The climax of the story is not the speaking baby. It is the name, spoken by Allah, that tells you exactly who he is.
