Maryam 19:56

وَٱذْكُرْ فِى ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ إِدْرِيسَ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا نَّبِيًّا

“And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The roll-call ends with its oldest name, a prophet whose story is never told, keeping only what outlasted everything else: he was true.

A reflection

A prophet with no story

Most readers pass Idris quickly. There is nothing to hold on to. No people to argue with, no miracle, no journey. Just a name and two words. The quiet assumption is that a prophet without a story must be a minor one.

Look at what the surah does with him. The corpus finds his name only twice in the whole Qur'an: here, and once in Al-Anbiya, among the patient. No episode is told in either place. Everything we are given is character.

Then look at the frame. The roll-call of portraits began at 19:41 with Ibrahim: innahu kāna ṣiddīqan nabiyyan, he was a man of truth, a prophet. Here it ends with Idris in exactly the same words. Only the name changes. The sequence opens and closes on one phrase, like two doorposts carved alike.

And Idris is the oldest of them. The commentaries place him before Nuh, among his forefathers. One commentary numbers the surah's stories and marks this as the last of them. The roll-call has walked back through time, from Zakariyya and Yahya to the very edge of the earliest generations.

Picture an archaeologist cutting a trench through a site. Near the top are the recent layers, crowded with objects and names. As she digs deeper, less survives. At the bottom, below everything, she finds almost nothing. Only what was hard enough to last.

That is what the surah finds at the bottom of its trench. Of Idris, beneath all the centuries, nothing remains but this: ṣiddīq. A man whose truth held.

So the assumption turns over. Idris is not a minor figure because his story is lost. He is the clearest proof of what lasts. Stories wear away. Truthfulness, it seems, does not.
