Maryam · Makki · ayah 55 of 98

Maryam 19:55

وَكَانَ يَأْمُرُ أَهْلَهُۥ بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ وَكَانَ عِندَ رَبِّهِۦ مَرْضِيًّا

“And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakāh and was to his Lord pleasing [i.e., accepted by Him].”

Essence

Ismaʿil's work began inside his own tent, kept on without end, and was judged by one approval only: his Lord's, not his family's.

A reflection

Not a strict father barking at dawn

Say he used to command his family to pray, and many readers picture something they have met. A stern voice at dawn. A father policing prayer times, a home where faith arrives as orders. Some nod at the ayah because they grew up in that house. Others flinch for the same reason.

The words describe something else. Kāna yaʾmuru is a past habit: he used to keep on commanding. Not one announcement, but a practice carried through the years. Elsewhere the Qur'an gives the Prophet ﷺ the same instruction and attaches its condition. Command your family to pray, and be patient in it yourself. The commanding is yoked to patience, and the patience comes first in the one who commands.

The root of amr gave the first hearers a picture that has nothing to do with shouting. A desert road was marked with cairns, piles of stones, and each one showed the way. A blind man's amīr was whoever took his hand and led him. Commanding, in that picture, is showing the road and walking it with someone.

One commentary adds what drove it. His concern for their faith outweighed his tenderness about their comfort in this world. That is the opposite of most people, he notes. Most of us worry about our families' grades, health and money far more than their prayer.

So the ayah corrects two images at once. Not the tyrant at the bedroom door, and not the parent too polite to mention Allah at all. A man who kept, patiently and for years, pointing those he loved towards prayer and giving. Like a cairn on the road, not a whip.

And the ayah closes by telling us whose judgement mattered. Not the family's. He was pleasing to his Lord.
