Maryam 19:78

أَطَّلَعَ ٱلْغَيْبَ أَمِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا

“Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Every confident claim about the next life needs a warrant: either you climbed up and saw it, or the Most Merciful promised it.

A reflection

How exactly do you know

The usual way of hearing this ayah is as a put-down. A rich man said something arrogant, and the Qur'an mocked him. Read that way it is closed, finished, and about somebody else.

Look at its shape instead. It is a question about evidence. The man had sworn that he would be given wealth and children in the next life. The ayah does not first argue that he is wrong. It asks how he knows. Has he looked into the unseen? Or has he taken a covenant from the Most Merciful?

That question has a long reach. Picture a sales director at a client dinner, two glasses in. He tells a colleague he has always landed on his feet, and whatever comes after death will be no different. He is not a religious man. He is not an atheist either. He is simply confident, the way he is confident about the next quarter. Nobody at the table asks him how he knows, because nobody asks that at dinner.

The ayah asks it. The confident sceptic who says there is certainly nothing afterwards is asked the same question. So is the believer who has quietly decided that their own place is secure, whatever they do. Each is making a claim about something screened from sight. Each needs one of two warrants, and the ayah names both.

The question does not ask anyone to stop hoping. It asks them to know what their hope is resting on. That is a more honest place to stand, and it is the place every reader of this ayah is being asked to stand.
