Maryam 19:87
لَّا يَمْلِكُونَ ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ عِندَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ عَهْدًا
“None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant.[828]”
Saheeh International
Essence
No one owns intercession on that Day; someone will stand beside you only if you took a covenant with the Most Merciful while you could.
A reflection
Intercession is not knowing the right people
In much of the world, things get done through connections. A graduate's father rings a cousin who sits on a company board. An interview appears that was not advertised. Many cultures have a word for this kind of pull. It is easy to carry that picture into the next life. Intercession becomes the ultimate connection: know the right saint, and the door opens.
This ayah dismantles that picture with its first verb. They will not own intercession. Yamlikūn is the verb of ownership and control. Nobody holds intercession as property, to spend on whom they like. The commentaries tie this ayah to others that say the same. Intercession will not benefit, except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and whose word He approves (20:109). An early authority recited that ayah while explaining this one. A rhetorical commentary adds two more (34:23, 53:26).
One commentary even reads covenant here in a second sense: permission. The way a ruler ʿahida to someone, commissioning him for a task. On that reading, only those commissioned by Allah may intercede at all.
This is precisely the correction the surah needed. Six ayat earlier, people took gods for strength, and the commentaries say they hoped those gods would intercede for them. This ayah answers that hope directly. Intercession was never in the gods' gift, or anyone's.
So the question changes. It is not who do I know? It is what is between me and the Most Merciful? That is the only connection that will matter.
